Bid Adieu to Analog TV for DTV grabbing the market

Say good bye to writhe picture and unpleasant sound. The new digital TV comes with the replacement of the age old analog TV which makes use of analog signals. Simply put, DTV comes into being when the accomplishment of moving images and sound is done through discrete signals.

KBC’s win over TV hosting Deal stuns market

As the Public broadcaster KBC is all set to enter the era of digitalization, its deal with the Swedish pay-tv operator, NGB, is forecasted to disturb the local television landscape.

With the launch of new pay-tv channel, Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) is planning to keep Kenya Broadcasting Corporation as its digital platform to reach its customers creating discontent among local players. These local player do not want in any way the public broadcaster’s infrastructure be used.

But the managing director of KBC, Mr. David Waweru has opposed the opposition saying that satellite pay- TV operator DSTV has similar deals with the national broadcaster.

NGB being a JV between the Swedish Next Generation Broadcasting Africa AB and a Kenyan firm Digital Broadcasting Transmex has just the deal of using KBC’s infrastructure to deliver the services in the market.
The fresh question of distributing new licenses that was supposed to govern the sector was raised in the meeting of NGB CEO, Bjorn Weigel with his new partner.
A pay-tv operator Freeview alleged for not having any word with the regulator regarding the new licenses.

Under the new agreement, KBC, through its newly set division, Signet was suppose to distribute digital television distribution signal. This change is expected to revolutionise the way of conduct of the business, relieving the operators from the burden of building and maintaining infrastructure and reduce the entry obstacles for new players.

More than 60 TV and 150 radio license applications are outstanding due to bounded analog frequencies of the Industry regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya. Digital broadcasting is expected to lessen this problem through efficient usage  of spectrum.
